Is paying for ChatGPT Plus and Gemini Advanced at once worth it?
The short version: if the second subscription is for cross-checking answers, you’re paying a full monthly fee for something you only use on the handful of decisions that genuinely matter. For daily use of one tool, a subscription is unbeatable. For cross-checking, two fixed fees is the worst of the three routes.
The sum is familiar: an AI subscription runs about £20 a month. Two, forty. And the reason given for the second one is almost never “I use it twice as much”; it’s “so I can compare”.
It’s worth looking at what that second fee actually buys.
What the first one buys
Daily access to a tool: the good models, long documents, more use per session. If you open it every day for work, the cost per use drops to pennies and there’s no argument. That subscription is well spent.
What the second one buys
Here it’s worth being honest. If the second is there to put another opinion on the table, what you’re buying is the ability to compare, and that ability only gets exercised when the decision deserves it: a contract, a job move, a big purchase. Generously, that’s a handful of times a year.
You’re paying twelve months for a handful of uses. And paying for the work of doing it yourself: opening two tabs, pasting the identical question, not telling one what the other said, and reading both lines of reasoning in full. The conditions are in asking multiple AIs at once, and skipping any one of them invalidates the exercise.
The three options, undressed
One subscription. Best if you use AI daily and one voice is enough. Cheap per use, zero friction, no cross-checking.
Two or three subscriptions. Makes sense in one specific case: you genuinely use each for different things — one for writing, one for code, one for long documents — and not just “in case”. Otherwise it’s £480 to £720 a year of which you use a small part.
Pay as you go. No fee: you pay what you consume. It wins when use is irregular, or when what you want is the cross-check, because then cross-checking stops being your job and stops costing two fixed fees.
The sum that settles it
Don’t look at the price, look at last month:
- How many times did you open an AI for something that genuinely mattered? Not to play: to decide or resolve something.
- In how many of those would a second opinion in front of you have changed anything?
- Divide what you pay monthly by that second number.
If the figure makes you uncomfortable, you have your answer: you don’t need another fee, you need a different way of paying.

So when does paying for two make sense? When each does a different job in your week and you can name it. If the answer is “just in case”, that’s the answer of a fee you don’t use.
